Dante vs Ryan Haynes ....

So the Dub Vee hip hop scene is abuzz with Clarksburg's own Dante having problems with Ryan Haynes aka The Unknownz and his business practices.... his Interscope "connections" and the "Mountain State Mindstate" project that does or does not exist. Here is one thing that Dante himself wrote....

the dude known as THE UNKNOWNZ R.H......has lied to me to the extent of warranting TOTAL severance of ties between us two.

I had recorded with him several times and has come to respect the dude and, like MANY of you, I gave him the benefit of the doubt regarding his "industry connections, light promises, and relayed messages". Like MANY of you, i WANTED to believe the things he says. BUUUUT...Im no fool. And in taking me for one....he blew his mascarade. Fascade rather....

So....he calls me the other morning to tell me that he recieved a call from his "interscope connect"...and that they wanted to "move foward with me asap"...and alllllll they needed was for me to be ascap & ase registered...a supposedly $43 fee, which R.H. offers to pay for and register me himself, if i can pay him back. So, of course, i say YES! and he gets paid back within hours. HOWEVER...in the process, i was informed that to register with ascap is only $25 and CANNOT BE DONE without a SS# ! PERIOD! So, concerned about the inconsistancy, i contacted R.H. with questions. His response ? ....."i had to call a special phone # and get you a temporary registration undr interscopes company i.d. # ....you are under interscopes ascap. And your reg. # will be generated in 24 hours "

OF COURSE I WANNA BELIEVE THIS ....but once i saw ON ASCAP 'S WEBSITE that....1...an artist HAS to submit his/her SS# (R.H. didnt ask for mine)...2...its ONLY $25 for LIFETIME registration (R.H. said theres additional $18 to register wit ase?) ....3....theres NO MENTION of "temporary" registration. Sooooo.... i CALL ASCAP. ....

.........THEY SAID .....1.........they NEVER heard of/ dont have conjunctional registration wit ASE (or AES for that matter).....2...there IS NOT a structure in ASCAP registration that involves using a rec labels "i.d.#".....3....it IS IN NO WAY POSSIBLE to register without using your SS#.....4....after checking database, I HAVE NOT BEEN REGISTERED with ASCAP in any way, shape or form.....5....THEY SAID IT SOUNDS LIKE BS!

So, at the point of losing all faith in this IMPOSTER ...I called an Interscope office with a few questions. Specifically...a MAJOR A+R (found lady gaga )....the office of Martin Kierszenbaum. (3108651000). I asked...if theyd heard of a MOUNTAIN-STATE MINDSTATE project or any project from wv...they said "NO, nothing that we can see." (HOWEVER, THEY DID SAY THAT ITS NOT POSSIBLE TO EVER KNOW FOR SURE UNTIL THE PERSON SAYS WHO THEIR A&R REP CONNECT IS.....THEN YOU SIMPLY CALL THEIR OFFICE) I asked...if its reasonable to believe that an artist can recieve a 5 digit payout for a single song on a mixtape....he chuckled and said "An unsigned and unknown rap artist? Never seen it". I asked about the ASCAP shit....he said "Sounds like babble, we dont operate like that. And we wouldnt ask YOU to pay any necessary registration fees if we wanted to work with you". THE DISCUSSION ENDS WITH HIM SAYING I SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THIS PERSON and that it "SOUNDS FISHY".

ALSO R.H. tells me he can get me 1000 cds (covers/barcode/case etc) FOR $300....bc of a "connection" . THEN- when push came to shove...HIS BEST OFFER WAS 900 cds for $1000! wtf?

HE thinks we are all dumb. He tells us what we wanna hear. Lemme ask yall....HAS ANYONE RECIEVED A CHECK FROM INTERSCOPE YET? ANYONE ACTUALLY TALK TO AN A+R FROM INTERSCOPE OR ANYWHERE? ANYONE EVER SEE ANY PROOF ABOYT THE WV MIXTAPE PROJECT? ANYONE EVER REEEEAAALLY BENEFITTED FROM HIS "INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS" ....NO! HES ALL TALK---CON MAN ---COMPULSIVE LIAR--- WHATEVER . 92% Of what he says is bs. WHERES PROOF OF THE CONTRARY? THERE IS NONE ! AT BEST....HES AN EXTREME EXXAGERATOR! Not to mention a swindler for FAKING MY ASCAP REGISTRATION FOR A PETTY 40 bucks. LISTEN---he uses his "out of town-ness" and stories to prey on our hopes and ambitions. MultiFest is the biggest festival in the state featuring Hip Hop/RnB and Classic Urban music by far... if you're not at the Capital complex every year for this event that draws 10-20,000 people per night you are missing out.

Anyways back to what I was here to talk about... the underground Hip Hop scene in the state right now is blooming. I personally picked up 6 NEW mixtapes or albums last night from artists out there grinding. Expect a lot of music from these guys who mostly have little to no internet presence coming up over the next week.

The afterparty hosted by Pleasure P put on by Say Uncle Ent and Big Muss with DJ's Woody Wood and Charlie Blac was off the chain by the way. Looks like Club VIP is making a run as the new hot spot considering the same promotion duo has another party tonight with LeToya Luckett.

I'll be back out there tonight for the Whispers and seeing what else is available, I know I didn't catch up with everybody with product in the streets.

When West Virginia comes to mind, most people think of mountains, pick-up trucks and banjo.

“Hip-hop” music isn’t at the top of the list — yet.

But four young musicians from Fayette and Raleigh counties are hoping to change the world’s perception of hip-hop and to educate people all around the globe about their home state.

Hip-hop group 3rd Degree served up their original brand of locally inspired hip-hop music in December on a debut CD titled “304 Yep!”

So far, 7,000 fans have downloaded tracks from the group’s...

and although i wouldnt trade that experience for the world...i have to say... that you newer cats are some LUCKY sonofabitches with the ease of collecting free digital music these days...

MJ dies...your 18 and youve never owned one of his records in your life....and within 20 minutes youve got his entire discography ....and your dropping a best of....

i remember doing corporate gigs back in the early 90s and in advance theyd request some weird ass song to be played for the key speakers entrance to the stage.... and id spend 3 days going to all my local second hand record stores tryin desperately to find the album that song was on....and by the time i found it....id be willing to pay ANYTHING for it...just to stop the madness

nowadays....cats get annoyed when their thread requesting music isnt answered in 5 minutes....

im not gonna condemn anyone for that... its a beautiful thing...and i take part in it as well... but modern technology has made our lives sooooooooooo much easier..... so all im sayin is.... APRECIATE IT!!!.... go easy on the recycle bin.... cherish a song or a mixtape for a little while before making it evaporate into cyberspace wasteland

and GIVE BACK PEOPLE!!!!....

DJ's and PRODUCERS...take those FREE SONGS ...FREE ACAPELLAS...FREE INSTRUMENTALS...FREE CLASSIC SONGS TO SAMPLE...FREE FUCKIN DISCOGRAPHIES...and do something with them.... make something special.... make something you can be proud of for a long time.... make other people love music because of YOUR contribution...

MC's... take your time....make songs worth a shit...quality over quantity....make classics instead of lining the bottom of peoples recycle bins like a bird cage...

Let people know we are upgrading and transitioning the site and forums at WVRapScene.com for better functionality and security please. When the site goes back up, users will need to reregister because we're replacing the forums with a better version.

WV State Univ's Hip Hop Boot Camp featured in Charleston Daily Mail...

A GREAT place for aspiring young hip hop artists, producers, photographers, videographers, dancers and graphic artists to get their feet wet....

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Aspiring young dancers, producers, filmmakers and artists now have a place to hone their skills and get expert advice from hip-hop industry insiders.

The West Virginia State University Extension Service is sponsoring a Hip-Hop Boot Camp for kids entering the sixth through 12th grades. The camp will take place from July 26 to 30 at Camp Virgil Tate in Charleston.

"It's a camp that really focuses on the hip-hop music industry," said Paul Henderson, the West Virginia State extension agent who oversees the camp. "It gives kids the opportunity to participate in different tracks."

Campers can take lessons in dance, voice, music production, filmmaking, graffiti art or photography. The camp will also encourage exercise, nutrition and entrepreneurship.

Henderson said the overnight camp is designed to reinforce the behind-the-scenes aspects of the hip-hop industry, which he considers essential for succeeding in the music business.

"There's a lot more than what they see on MTV or BET," he said.

Although I have heard the same rumors that N8 mentions, this track is not a diss but more of a concept. I think Charleston is too big to just focus on the rats that happen to rap also. I think this is more for the streets and at people in the streets then just at certain rappers.

Self Made Gang's Monsta - Beastie Boy

Self Made just dropped their new street album "Street Smarts" last Friday with a huge release party in Huntington. Doing it as big as usual they had over 600 people there and them and some special guests including Lexington Ky's G Mack (Check for his single "Get Naked" on 106 n Park in a couple of weeks) tore the stage down. One of the best reponces of the night was to Bluefield's own Monsta and his song "Beastie Boy" who had the crowd going nuts. Self Made has Huntington on SMASH again right now with this project and it is moving units like crazy in the streets. We'll be leaking a few songs off of the project over the next week or two so keep checking back but make sure you make it to the store and buy a copy.
